What is a study permit?
The study permit is a document that has been issued by IRCC that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. almost every foreign national need a study permit to study in Canada. Our RCIC (Authorized Representative of IRCC and member of ICCRC can apply before you travel to Canada. Your study permit is provided at one of the Canadian Port of Entry when you enter in Canada. You may need a student visa or a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) upon your study permit application.
In case you are staying and nationals of below mentioned countries then, you may obtain a study permit faster through the Student Direct Stream only if you are living in China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam.
International students who have studied and completed a program of at least eight months at an eligible DLI and have applied for Post graduate Work permit will always have lucrative offers lying for them. These work permits allow any international students who have completed their studies to work with multinational companies who are ready to get absorbed. Students studying in Canadian colleges or institutions hold a study permit. This allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during classes and full time during scheduled breaks in your academic calendar. There are many internships which are available and employers do recruitment and hiring students under Summer Internships or Winter Internships or Co-op Placements where the Co-op work placements forms an integral and mandatory part of your studies that cannot be more than 50% of your total program of study. Students are always encouraged to have good grades, meet the criteria of their study permit and have a valid social insurance number to get hired and placed in multinationals in Science, Engineering, IT, Finance, Business, Telecom, Healthcare or Service and Hospitality sectors.
There are different ways an international student in Canada can be benefited while studying his or her course. You may either opt for
On campus work: Under the Canadian Immigration law, a full time international student can work up to 20 hours per week on campus for the first six months of their studies without a work permit.
Off campus work: After six months of full time study, an international student in Canada can apply for a work permit to work up to 20 hours per week on or off campus and full time during scheduled breaks, like summer or winter holidays or even reading weeks.
Internship / Co-op Work Placement: Many colleges of their repute offer this. It’s another way an international student can get a first-hand knowledge about Canadian employment market that includes an internship or co-op work placement. Students in co-op programs complete up to three work terms with a Canadian company or corporation or multinationals, doing work related to their program of study. If you were in a co-op program (or another academic program with a similar work placement or internship), your co-op work experience does not count towards Canadian experience class work experience. You can only count work experience that you get after you graduate. Many other programs offer internships, which are unpaid, but still allow international students to build their career with Canadian work experience.
Volunteer Work Experience: Canadian employers view volunteer work experience as very valuable, and the life experiences you can take away are priceless. It gives you an opportunity to get gelled with lots of other students from different sect and you come to know a different culture thereby broadening your thoughts to achieve something.
Staying in Canada and Working after Graduation: After successful graduation, international students may be eligible to apply for a post-graduate work permit to stay and work in Canada for up to three years. This depends upon your DLI being accepted by IRCC in order for you to apply for PGWP. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows you if you have graduated from an eligible Canadian (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Only Skilled Canadian work experience in National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill type 0 or skill level A or B that is gained through the PGWP will make you eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian experience class within Express Entry. You can only receive a post-graduate work permit in Canada once, so if a student is considering a second program or wants to continue on to university with transfer credits, he/she should wait until completing all of their studies in Canada to maximize the length of the post-graduate work permit they are eligible to apply for. The length of a post-graduate work permit will be determined by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

You may use your student work experience to meet work experience requirements for Federal Skilled Worker Program: Student work experience gained while you were studying in Canada or abroad counts towards the minimum requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program if the work: a) was paid by wages or commissions, b) was continuous (no gaps in employment), and c) meets all the other requirements of the Program. This includes co-op terms and apprenticeships.
Under Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program this Student work experience doesn’t count towards the minimum requirements.

CAD$ 2000 plus the accrued interest will be deposited into your personal Scotiabank account upon your arrival. If you want to change your DLI- If you change post-secondary schools, the school you plan to change to must also be a DLI. You must inform IRCC each time you change your DLI. You do not need to apply to change your study permit if you are changing schools but, you need to inform your authorized representative who can help you out.
International financial aids
There are many student Grants, Scholarships or bursaries are available for International Students coming for study in Canada. There are University and College provided Aids at both Undergraduate and Post-Graduate levels. Canada being part of commonwealth country, the students from other commonwealth countries are eligible under the Canada Commonwealth Scholarship program.
Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grants the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships each year for students doing high quality research in Canada.
For Students who take Post-doctoral training programs and do fellowship, a research award is provided under the Mitacs Elevate scholarships.
For International students completing their PhD and looking for advance research options, can get an annual stipend under the CIFAR Global Scholars Program.
Apart from these there are many provincial and territorial awards schemed by each of the respective Provincial governments. The scholarship grants are usually dependent on any student’s Academic performance, Scores or GPA’s obtained, language proficiencies and performance in classroom activities.

Student Jobs (In campus/ Off campus)
On a student permit, you can qualify to work for 20 hours per week part time work during college/ university semesters and full-time during breaks without the work permit. To qualify for this, you must have a
– A valid Study Permit
– Are a Full-Time Student at a Designated Learning Institute
– Have already started your studying
– Enrolled in a program that leads to a degree, diploma, or a certificate and at least 6 months long
– Have your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
At an average, a student can earn up-to 12-15$ per hour or about 800 CAD$ – 1000 CAD$ in 4 weeks to meet his living expenses as there are many part-time jobs get available for Students.

Many students know exactly what they want, college or university, many others do both. Combining college and university can prepare you with the skills and critical thinking capacity to excel at your chosen career. You may choose to do a college diploma first, and then have your credits transferred to university so you can complete a university degree after. Other students go to university first, and then attend college to gain the focused skills they need to succeed. Canadian universities offer programs at three levels: Bachelor’s, masters and PhD or doctoral studies. Some universities also offer short programs that give students certificates, diplomas, or professional degrees. These may appeal to you if you are a mature international student who has been working and wishes to acquire new skills to advance your career. If you are looking for practical, hands-on career training, a Canadian college education will get you there. College aims to prepare you for your chosen career, so you can get a good job in Canada or in your home country when you complete your studies.

Some colleges offer applied bachelor’s degrees. Colleges in Canada do not offer master’s or PhD degrees.
In Quebec, there are also CÉGEPs, or collèges d’enseignement général et professionnel. High school students in Quebec who wish to attend university are required to complete studies at the CÉGEP (or equivalent) level. Canadian universities and colleges can transfer your credits from your home institution to Canada if you would like to pursue or complete your studies here.
If you are still in your home country, ask your current institution if it has a credit recognition agreement with colleges or universities in Canada. The international studies office at your school should be able to help you. Next, ask the Canadian college or university you wish to attend whether they will allow you to transfer some or all your credits. They will likely request a copy of your academic transcripts. If so, you can use one of the ECA providing agencies in Canada.

Extending your study permit
You should apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires. Make sure your passport does not expire at the same time. You cannot extend your study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.
If you apply before your permit expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions as your current study permit until IRCC decides your application.
You should apply to extend your study permit if you plan to travel outside Canada and your permit will expire while you are travelling.
Your study permit will expire on the date marked on the permit or 90 days after the day you complete your studies, whichever comes first.
The 90 days begin: on the date you get the first notification from your school (such as an email, letter, transcript, etc.) that you completed your program or when you get your degree, diploma, or certificate.

In some cases, you may apply to restore your status as a student. To apply, you must
- submit your application within 90 days of losing your status
- keep meeting the requirements for your stay
- have met all the conditions listed on your permit, and Pay restoration fee and study permit
